Procedure is fact-dependent in ways that a general page cannot capture. The rule that governs your situation may turn on the posture of the case, the nature of the claim, how the responses were served, what the parties agreed to, or an order in your specific action that supersedes the statewide default.

The order matters. The last two override the general rule more often than people expect, and they are the reason a page that is correct statewide can still be wrong in your courtroom.

Statutes and rules change

California's civil discovery statutes have been amended repeatedly, including changes effective as recently as January 1, 2026. Rules of Court are revised annually. Local rules and standing orders change without notice to anyone.

Deadlines are your responsibility

Nothing on this site should be treated as a calculated deadline for your matter.

Where a page discusses timing, it explains how the rule works. It does not compute your date, and links to a calculator do not compute your date either. Any tool, including calcourtdeadlines.com, is an aid to your own calculation and not a substitute for it.

Docket your own dates. Calendar them independently. If a deadline is jurisdictional, and several discussed on this site are, no explanation here and no tool anywhere will recover it for you once it passes.

Judicial Council form links use the court's own undated per-form pages so they survive revisions, but forms are revised and item numbers move. Confirm the current version of any form before you file it.
